Studley ward is the larger part of the old City of Kew. In terms of our natural and built environment Studley contains Kew Junction, a good portion of the Yarra Bend Park, the Studley Park Boat House, Bellbird Park, the Kew Cottages site, along with the iconic schools, stately homes, the beautiful Alexandra Gardens, the Kew Police Station and Court house and the tranquil oasis that is Willsmere Billabong and surrounds.
Studley ward exhibits some of the best social characteristics in Boroondara. This is a legacy from the old City of Kew. There a many examples of how this community connects together, with the major event of the Kew Festival each March, which puts the entire community on shows, Schools, the Kew Historical Society, The Boroondara Deanery, Croquet Club, Scouts, Cricket Club, many, many more come out on parade.
For shopping, there is the Kew Junction and the Willsmere Village and some iconic retailers. Both shopping strips have thriving coffee cultures and are great places to visit. Studley is also a place of Churches, with lots of busy faith communities spread around the ward.
Studley ward has a long association with disability, disadvantage and homelessness. There are many institutions and groups that assist people that are less fortunate. We have a Camcare office behind the library, Mosiac in Malmsbury Street and St Pauls in Fernhust Grove. These places are often supported by volunteers, and we are blessed to have a community that puts so much effort into looking after our own.
There are challenges that we face:
- Freeway noise, since the opening of East Link, freeway noise has significantly worsened
- Clearway extensions, the State wish to extend the clearway in the morning from 9am until 10am and in the afternoon from 3pm to 4.30pm. These hours are some of the most productive hours on our shopping strip and must not be lost
- The loss of spaces caused by urban intensification
- Climate Change - regardless of your views we all use more water in our homes and we have not been able to increase supply our tree canopy has been steadily reducing it is not raining as often we all consume more energy than we used to
Cr Phillip Healey has not ingnored these issues and Boroondara leads many local government in advocacy and programs, and more can be done.
Studley Ward is the best place in Boroondara to grow up, raise a family, or spend your golden years. We have a strong record of community support, and a great village feel.
